ARTIST STATEMENT KEVIN LUCERO LESS
Painting is a state of being... self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.

I firmly believe that all we retain from our lives as human beings are the feelings we have experienced. Feelings relived over and over again in our minds as kinetic images romaticized and emotionally heightened. I focus on this nostalgia because the experiences of the past fuel the emotion in construction.
I construct simple wire sculptures of the "noun" or catalyst of the feeling experienced. From this sculpture I select a detailed area and draw it repeatedly from different points of view. I choose what the viewer will see. This abstraction conspires to veil the "noun" and maintain a secretive aspect that invites viewer interaction and contemplation. The linear compositions are then mapped on a canvas portraying a geographical location and time for the event in question. This direct relation of "noun" and geography attempt to communicate that the map is the territory. The map becomes more than just representation; it becomes a reality and serves as an atlas-like journal entry, revealing itself over time. Some artists try to show/tell all in their work. I believe it is much more shrewd to tell little, and let the audience reach their own sensibilities.
I harbor my life in Los Angeles and the haunting experiences from that place. The majority of my work focuses on that past, giving these maps symbolic importance and relaying a concept of life in the city of angels.
I wonder why we waste our lives here, when we could run away to paradise... why in L.A.
